EP Vice-President Victor Negrescu facilitates dialogue between European institutions on EU trade policy: This is how European policy is made

The Vice-President of the European Parliament, Victor Negrescu, organized a meeting in the European legislature with the European Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security, Interinstitutional Relations and Transparency, Maroš Šefčovič.

The purpose of this meeting was to better understand the implications of the agreements recently concluded by the European Commission with the United States and Mercosur countries, which have generated discontent in the European Parliament, where a motion was tabled by the far left.

”The European Union’s trade policy remains a key issue and is the subject of intense debate at European level. Two important trade agreements have recently been signed, one with the United States and the other with the Mercosur countries. To better understand the implications of these agreements, I organized a meeting with the European Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security, Interinstitutional Relations, and Transparency, Maroš Šefčovič”, Victor Negrescu emphasized.

The MEP called for a mutually beneficial relationship between the EU and the US, based on the principle of fairness between partners who share the same goal: to protect their citizens and democratic norms.

„Divided, we are clearly weaker. But united we can protect our citizens. And in order to do so, we need to be fair partners and respect our democratic rules. I support the need for a deal and the work done by the EU Commissioner. I can even accept the request for Europe to invest more in defence, but I have difficulties in accepting some of the imbalances in the agreement, in particular related to agriculture and our industry, but also the lack of consultation of Parliament and of the business sector. This is Europe. We are not perfect, but we love our democratic imperfections and stand strong for our values. It is normal for the Parliament to scrutinize the agreement, but we stand strong and firm in supporting anything that can help us improve the text without jeopardising the deal”, Victor Negrescu added.

The event convened by Victor Negrescu is part of a series of efforts to ensure effective communication between representatives of European institutions, placing the interests of European citizens at the center of their actions.

A few weeks ago, the Vice-President of the European Parliament and PES addressed issues such as EU trade policy and transatlantic relations in a discussion with Social Democrat Antonio Costa, President of the Council of Europe.

”This is how European politics is done: through information and dialogue”, concluded the Vice-President of the European Parliament.
