The Vice-President of the European Parliament, Social Democrat MEP Victor Negrescu, reaffirmed the institution’s unwavering support for the European path of the Republic of Moldova during his visit to Chișinău at the beginning of October.
During a meeting with the President of the Moldovan Parliament, Igor Grosu, which was also attended by the Head of the European Union Delegation to the Republic of Moldova, H.E. Jānis Mažeiks, discussions focused on intensifying cooperation between the European Parliament and the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova.
The officials addressed aspects of institutionalizing relations between the two parliaments, highlighting the importance of maintaining dialogue in the context of Moldova’s EU accession, as well as facilitating the exchange of experience between parliamentarians and officials from both institutions.
“The European legislature supports the European trajectory of the Republic of Moldova,” said Vice-President Victor Negrescu. “I put my trust in Moldova’s European future, its young generation, and its development potential,” he added.
The discussions also focused on the importance of combating misinformation and manipulation in the electoral process, as well as the measures taken by authorities in this regard.
In this context, Victor Negrescu referred to the resolution adopted by the European Parliament just two weeks before the presidential elections and the referendum to include the strategic goal of European integration in the Constitution of the Republic of Moldova. Through this document, MEPs issued a strong warning against Russia’s constant attempts to derail Moldova’s European path, calling on EU member states in the Council to adopt additional sanctions against those undermining the sovereignty of the country. Given that accession negotiations with the Republic of Moldova had already begun, the MEPs called for an accelerated evaluation of the European path and the timely organization of the next intergovernmental conferences on EU accession.
Before his visit to Chișinău, Vice-President Victor Negrescu addressed the European Parliament plenary, underlining the importance of the October 20th referendum on Moldova’s EU integration. The Romanian MEP argued that a massive vote in favor of amending the Constitution would make Moldova’s accession process irreversible. He emphasized that the European Parliament had consistently supported the country’s European path and had allocated additional funds for Chișinău.
“The Republic of Moldova’s European path is close to becoming irreversible. If the citizens of Moldova vote overwhelmingly for EU membership in the referendum on October 20th, the path to accession will become easier, and the EU’s support will grow stronger. As Vice-President of the European Parliament responsible for relations with the Republic of Moldova, I am pleased that with this resolution, we once again demonstrate the unconditional support of all pro-European political groups in the European legislature for Chișinău’s European journey. It is support for the citizens of the Republic of Moldova, for their development and security, in a challenging context generated by hybrid warfare and interference from Moscow’s authoritarian regime, which seeks to block this European path. Let me be clear: Moldova is not for sale, contrary to what Russian agents there claim. Moreover, we have decided to allocate additional funds for Moldova—€50 million for candidate countries and the Eastern neighborhood, €3 million for pre-accession assistance. There is still much to be done, and we are here for the Republic of Moldova,” Vice-President Victor Negrescu stated at the time.
In the recently adopted resolution, the European Parliament called on the European Commission to include the country in the Pre-Accession Assistance Instrument (IPA III) and to prioritize funding for EU candidate countries in the next Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) for the period 2028-2034.
Following the official visit to Chișinău and the pro-EU victory in the European integration referendum, Vice President Victor Negrescu met in Brussels with Moldova’s Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration, Cristina Gherasimov, who recently began negotiations with European institutions.
“This process is not easy, but it will lead to the modernization of the Republic of Moldova, a better life for its citizens, and increased security”, he stated.
Therefore, in his role as Vice President of the European Parliament responsible for relations with Moldova, he announced the initiation of efforts to open a European Parliament office in Chișinău and enhance parliamentary cooperation.
