MEP Victor Negrescu, Vice-President of the European Parliament and chief negotiator for the 2025 EU budget, hosted the event entitled ”European health policies and their impact on Central and Eastern European countries and Romania”, organized in the European Parliament.
As a member of the Subcommittee on Public Health, which deals with health issues at the European level, pharmaceutical products, and bioterrorism threats, he called for more EU support for health.
Therefore, the EP’s chief negotiator for the 2025 EU budget proposed in the official position of the European legislature ”more funding for health under the EU4Health and Horizon Europe programs, in particular for the prevention of cardiovascular diseases, the fight against cancer, rare diseases, diseases affecting children and young people, and actions to improve mental health and research in this field”.
In fact, Victor Negrescu believes that health should be a component regulated at European level. The European Union has no competence in this sector, as responsibility in the area of health lies rather with the member states.
The most recent report of the European Court of Auditors revealed that the main EU agencies in the health sector ”nevertheless managed to adapt and respond effectively to the crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic”, reflecting the importance of joint efforts in the face of major events, thus giving strength to unity, the pillar of the EU’s existence.
Victor Negrescu’s views and actions complete and support the lines of action outlined by President Ursula von der Leyen in the political guidelines for the next European Commission, in which ”health remains a central focus for the next five years”.
