The Vice-President of the European Parliament, Victor Negrescu, has obtained the support of the European Commission for his initiative to develop a Black Sea Maritime Security Hub.
”A concrete step for Black Sea security. We have received an official response from European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to our initiative to create a Black Sea Maritime Security Hub in Romania. The Commission confirms that this project is in line with the new European priorities: security, defense, resilience, protection of strategic infrastructure, and cooperation with partners in the region”, Victor Negrescu declared.
The Commission’s reaction comes after sustained efforts on the part of the Romanian MEP, including an official request addressed to the President of the European Commission and backed by all Romanian MEPs from pro-European political groups, as well as discussions with European officials and efforts to build political support for the European Union to develop this regional maritime security hub in Romania.
At the same time, the Romanian MEP has continued his efforts within the European Parliament to secure institutional and financial support for this initiative. The Committee on Budgets has adopted an amendment proposed by Victor Negrescu through which the European Parliament calls for the operationalisation of this hub in its position on next year’s EU budget. Thanks to amendments tabled by the Romanian MEP, the European Parliament has highlighted in its budgetary resolutions for 2026 and 2027 the need to establish a Black Sea Maritime Security Hub.
According to the member of the European Parliament, this hub ”is crucial” because ”the Black Sea has become one of Europe’s most sensitive geopolitical regions in the context of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine.”
Sectors that could see a boost in security include:
- maritime routes;
- critical infrastructure (cables, energy, ports);
- combating hybrid threats;
- increasing the European Union’s response capacity.
”The hub would mean more security, more coordination, and a real European presence in the Black Sea, not just statements”, the Vice-President of the European Parliament pointed out.
Victor Negrescu promised that he would do his utmost to make this project a reality.
