MEP Victor Negrescu, S&D Group rapporteur for the opinion of the European Parliament’s Health Committee on the revamped EU long-term budget, managed to include in the final compromise a number of key measures to improve the health system in the European Union. These measures were adopted by a large majority and will ensure more substantial funding for health in the next Multi-annual Financial Framework (MFF).
”These measures are an important step towards a fairer, more accessible and better funded European health system. The fight for more resources and ambitious reforms continues, but success now brings us closer to a Europe where health becomes a real priority for all citizens”, said Victor Negrescu.
in his capacity as S&D rapporteur, has introduced a series of key measures aimed at enhancing healthcare systems across the European Union. These proposals focus on improving medical access, supporting healthcare professionals, and strengthening cross-border cooperation.
Strengthening Healthcare in the EU
One of the core recommendations is ensuring a stable financial commitment to health within the EU’s Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF). This would provide sustained funding for essential medical services and research. Negrescu’s proposals emphasize access to innovative treatments for cardiovascular diseases, cancer, mental health conditions, rare diseases, and pediatric care. Advancing personalized medicine and AI-based diagnostics would lead to more effective and tailored treatments. Health education and prevention play a crucial role, with a strong focus on promoting balanced nutrition and a healthy lifestyle to reduce long-term medical issues.
Addressing medical staff shortages is another priority, requiring improved working conditions, increased support for research, and incentives for young professionals to enter the healthcare sector. Enhancing cross-border cooperation would facilitate patient mobility and joint clinical trials across EU member states. Expanding telemedicine platforms is also essential to ensure access to healthcare in rural and remote areas. Furthermore, improving the accessibility of hospitals and medical facilities for people with disabilities remains a key concern.
Revamping the EU’s long-term budget for regional cohesion
The European Parliament’s report on the EU’s long-term budget highlights the need to adapt financial priorities in a changing world. It stresses the importance of social, economic, and territorial cohesion across all European regions. The key priorities outlined include balanced development, ensuring that all regions, including the least developed, benefit from EU policies and funding. Supporting transitioning economies, particularly those undergoing environmental and digital transformations, is also a major focus. Strengthening crisis response mechanisms is crucial to enhance the resilience of regions against economic and social shocks. Additionally, promoting regional investment will drive innovation, growth, and competitiveness through targeted EU funding.
Through these measures, Victor Negrescu aims to build a more inclusive and resilient Europe, where access to quality healthcare and balanced regional development remain at the forefront of EU policy.
