At the beginning of March, MEP Victor Negrescu, Vice-President of the European Parliament and member of the Delegation for relations with the United States, paid an official visit to Washington, during which he held high-level meetings with members of the US Congress, representatives of the State Department, the US administration, the United Nations, as well as representatives of the business and academic communities. He described the discussions as „intense, marked by realism and pragmatism, but also optimistic outlooks”.
On this occasion, Negrescu emphasized the need for closer cooperation between the European Union and the United States, in the context of current global challenges and geopolitical tensions.
„The transatlantic relationship needs to be strengthened – the European Union and the United States need to work more closely together to address global challenges. There are some pro-European leaders who have managed to gain access to the highest level in the White House,” Negrescu said.
The EP vice-president’s visit to the US coincided with the tense meeting between President Donald Trump and Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy in the White House, an event that sparked strong reactions in the international political arena in the context of US-mediated peace talks with the Russian Federation.
„I was in Washington at the time of the meeting between President Donald Trump and Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky, which allowed me to immediately discuss the issue with US officials. What happened is, unfortunately, a predictable episode, but also worrying at the same time, given that we are talking about two powerful personalities,” said Victor Negrescu.
He then drew attention to the importance of the European Union’s involvement in strategic negotiations of this kind, emphasizing that regional and global stability cannot be ensured without an active European presence in international decision-making.
„This dispute has shown why a European presence at the negotiating table is necessary. The reality is that a difficult few weeks lie ahead for peace but also for Ukraine. I hope that this tense moment will be quickly overcome to avoid negative effects,” the EP official added.
A strong partnership between Europe and the US is considered essential to maintain strategic balance and global stability. He stressed that the European Union must adopt a more active role in the transatlantic dialogue, not only as an economic but also as a strategic partner, and reaffirmed his commitment to „a constructive but firm stance in support of the transatlantic relationship”.
