EP Vice-President Victor Negrescu says there are opportunities to change how the UK and EU work together

Social-democrat MEP Victor Negrescu, Vice-President of the European Parliament, stated, during a visit to London, that Romania “can play a key role in resetting cooperation with the European Union” and “can offer Romanians the opportunity to be at the center of this new partnership focused on the economic area”.

In his capacity as Vice President of the European Parliament, Victor Negrescu participated in an event organised by the Delegation of the European Union with the objective of reinforcing EU-UK collaboration and encouraging the civic involvement of the European diaspora in the UK. During this event, Mr. Negrescu addressed the significance of a new phase in bilateral relations and encouraged the European diaspora to assume an active role in British society, thereby contributing to the development of relations between the European Union and the United Kingdom.

At the same time, the representative of the European Parliament emphasized the importance of ensuring fair treatment for the almost 6 million European citizens living in the United Kingdom, of which more than 1 million are Romanians. Moreover, during the Brexit negotiations, Victor Negrescu was firm in defending the rights of these citizens, reiterating that “no one should be left behind”.

“The almost 6 million European citizens in the UK, of which around 1 million are Romanians, deserve to be treated fairly and to benefit from the full support of the European, British and national authorities”, said the Vice-President of the European Parliament.

Victor Negrescu added that, although significant changes on travel, residence and trade are to be expected from next year, there is hope that the coming to office of the Labour Party, with which the EU has built strong relations, will bring improvements in bilateral cooperation and remove existing barriers.
