European Parliament chief negotiator Victor Negrescu calls for increased financial allocations to fight corruption, drug trafficking and money laundering in the 2025 EU budget

In the context of next year’s EU budget, MEP Victor Negrescu, in his capacity as the European Parliament’s chief negotiator, proposes an increase in support for European agencies dealing with the fight against drug trafficking, corruption and money laundering.

Negrescu’s recent discussions with representatives of the European Public Prosecutor’s Office’s, highlighted the importance of strengthening European efforts in these critical areas. “I am glad that we have many Romanian professionals working at the highest level in these institutions,” said the Social-Democrat MEP.

During the meeting, the Romanian MEP presented the European Parliament’s guidelines for the 2025 budget, highlighting the need for diligence, responsibility, and respect for EU values in the use of European funds and in relations with implementing partners. The document reiterates the importance of effective monitoring and control bodies to reveal and sanction offences against the EU’s financial interests, stressing that investments in the fight against corruption generate an enormous net return within the European Union.

At the same time, the MEP stressed the need to allocate adequate resources, including human resources, to these bodies to carry out their tasks as effectively as possible. He also highlighted the importance of adequate EU supervision to ensure the proper functioning of the financial sector for the benefit of citizens and consumers.
