MEP Victor Negrescu supports regulating the European citizenship and the creation of a Europe-wide programme on civic education in Europe

In a speech to the European Parliament, Social Democrat MEP Victor Negrescu called for the regulation of European citizenship and for the creation of a Europe-wide programme on civic education in Europe.

“The European Union needs provisions for European citizenship in the true sense of the word. All citizens of the Member States should enjoy full rights and be treated equally, wherever they are in the European Union. We need to ensure that documents and studies are fully recognised, that social rights and benefits can be easily transferred, including pensions and child allowances, that there are no more differences in treatment and that intra-European mobility is fully ensured”, said Victor Negrescu.

The Romanian MEP also proposed the creation of a common European programme on civic education in Europe, which he considers essential for the future of the EU.

“Romanians, Italians or Swedes, we are all Europeans, and this means being aware of our rights and how the EU works. If we have well-informed European citizens, we will have a truly strong Europe and Member States!”, stressed the Romanian MEP.

Nearly 5 years ago, he started a campaign with his colleagues in PES activists Romania, gathering tens of thousands of signatures from Romanians who supported European citizenship.
