As Vice-Chair of the European Parliament’s Committee on Education, Culture, Youth, Media and Sport, MEP Victor Negrescu asked the European Commission to ensure that national sports federations respect European values.
The MEP’s request came because of the Hungarian Football Federation’s use of a revisionist map in sports competitions, printed on promotional material for such competitions, such as flags or scarves.
However, the Hungarian sports body’s action was not approved by the European Union of Football Associations (UEFA).
“I welcome UEFA’s decision stating that the use of such symbols has not been authorised, but the reactions in the public arena make it necessary for the European Commission to intervene,” said MEP Victor Negrescu.
In his opinion, this intervention should come from the directorates in charge of sports cooperation, so as to prevent the use of symbols that may incite hatred or discrimination in sports competitions.
“I support the need for sport to remain a place where good relations and fair play are promoted”, concluded MEP Victor Negrescu.
