Victor Negrescu requests the European Commission’s intervention to implement existing tools to limit the impact of the environmental disaster in the Black Sea on the territorial waters of Romania and Bulgaria

MEP Victor Negrescu, Vice-President of the European Parliament, questioned the European Commission on the ecological disaster caused by the sinking of two Russian oil tankers in the Kerch Strait, which severely affected the Black Sea ecosystem. In a post on his Facebook page, Negrescu highlighted the gravity of the situation and called for concrete actions to limit the impact on the territorial waters of Romania and Bulgaria.

”For some, it is a minor issue, but the Black Sea is important for Romania,” Negrescu said, underlining the scale of the disaster that resulted in the death of hundreds of birds, dozens of dolphins and thousands of marine life.

The Black Sea ecosystem was contaminated by the substances that ended up in the water, including thousands of tons of M100, a highly toxic synthetic product.

The Vice-President of the European Parliament therefore called on the European Commission to implement existing instruments to limit the effects of this ecological disaster.

”The European institutions are invited to support the Member States in the Black Sea area in order to restore marine ecosystems, protect biodiversity, avoid any risk to the population and clean up any beaches that may have been affected,” Victor Negrescu wrote.

The accident in the Kerch Strait area, which damaged two Russian oil tankers and claimed the life of one person, took place on December 15, 2024, after a strong storm in the Black Sea.
