Victor Negrescu MEP, in his capacity as Vice-Chair of the European Parliament’s Committee on Education and Culture (CULT), asked the European Commission to finance the development of educational programmes for the knowledge and promotion of cultural sites and monuments, using European funds.
“Romania has cultural sites and historical monuments of incalculable value, which must be promoted and supported in order to develop into cultural hubs. The cultural heritage of Alba County, in the heart of Transylvania, is of inestimable value for Romania’s national history and the local community”, Victor Negrescu offered as an example, on the International Day for Monuments and Sites.
In this context, the MEP pointed out that it is necessary to create funding lines dedicated to heritage education, because “this area is essential to educate and inform communities and European citizens in the spirit of respect for heritage buildings and historical sites and at the same time to promote our European values and social cohesion”.
The Vice-President of CULT Committee was the author of the amendment recommending that Member States allocate at least 2% of their recovery and resilience plans to the cultural and creative sector.
