MEP Victor Negrescu, host of the second edition of the Romanian Digital Day event: Romania has enormous potential in the digital sector. We need to learn to be relevant at the European decision-making level

MEP Victor Negrescu has called for a stronger Romanian presence at the table of the digital transformation discussions during the second edition of the Romanian Digital Day event that he organised in the European Parliament.

A number of personalities in the field, at European and national level, from both the private and public sectors, attended the event.

”Romania has enormous potential in the digital sector, but we need to use our skills to develop technologies and companies that are globally known and competitive. The European Union can help us do this, but to do so, we need to learn to be relevant at the European decision-making level. Since 2009 and to date, the European Commission has proposed more than 110 European measures and regulations, 70% of which have been implemented in Romanian legislation. Unfortunately, our country’s participation in drafting the documents has been low compared to our potential”, Negrescu stressed.

According to him, ”Romania deserves to be at the table of the digital transformation discussions because it can actively contribute to the debates taking place at European level, supporting an inclusive, people and SME-focused approach that makes innovation accessible to all”.

”We need to use, in this respect, including the around €10 billion of European resources available for the digital transformation of our country. The fact that we have managed to bring so many relevant actors and decision-makers together in Brussels shows that we are on the right track and that Romania could soon become an influential player at EU level” said the new Quaestor of the European Parliament, MEP Victor Negrescu.

The conference was attended by the European Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth, Iliana Ivanova, the Minister of Research, Innovation and Digitisation, Bogdan-Gruia Ivan, the Minister of Economy, Entrepreneurship and Tourism, Ștefan-Radu Oprea, as well as numerous leaders in the digital field, representatives of associations, universities, business and decision-makers from the European Commission and public institutions from Romania.
