Victor Negrescu is striving for an ambitious EU budget for 2024 that will positively influence the daily lives of European citizens, thus contributing to the consolidation of a truly social Europe.
The European Parliament resumes its work with a full agenda, aiming, among other things, to ensure that the EU budget for 2024 is adopted on time, so as to secure seamless funding for the implementation of European programmes.
In this context, Victor Negrescu aims to ensure that border security, as well as transportation and communication networks in peripheral areas of the EU get the necessary funding.
Among the other objectives the MEP has in sight are: supporting the farmers who face increased challenges, due to Russia’s illegal and unprovoked war against Ukraine, as well as due to the pedological drought, supporting Ukraine and its neighbouring countries, especially the Republic of Moldova, developing the EU’s disaster and crisis response capacities, in a context where natural disasters such as fires or floods are becoming increasingly violent, as exemplified by the recent situations in Greece or Slovenia.
In the context of rising inflation, Victor Negrescu, as a member of the Committee on Budgets and the Committee on Budgetary Control, has pointed that a real review of the European long-term budget is needed in order to make it easier for the European Union to manage multidimensional crises.
It should be recalled that in early June the European executive proposed an EU budget of €189.3 billion for 2024. The budget will be complemented by an estimated €113 billion in payments for grants under NextGenerationEU, the EU’s post-pandemic recovery instrument.
In the same month, the European Commission presented a proposal to strengthen the EU’s long-term budget to address the most pressing challenges, such as long-term support for Ukraine, managing migration flows, and promoting European competitiveness through a European Strategic Technology Platform (STEP).
In order to ensure that the EU has the necessary resources to continue to meet the challenges, it is essential to reach a timely agreement on the budget for 2024, and on measures for the EU’s long-term budget.
Therefore, negotiations between Member States and the European legislature, including the European Parliament’s approval, must be concluded before the end of the year, as budgetary pressures will materialize in 2024.
