MEP Victor Negrescu requested, during the plenary session of the European Parliament, the legal annulment of Austria’s veto, the financial compensation for the blockage and the sanctioning of a potential new refusal regarding Romania’s accession to the Schengen area, as is the case when Member States violate European legislation.
“Romanians can no longer wait at the whim of right-wing politicians in Vienna. This resolution explains very clearly why last year’s veto violates citizens’ rights and European law. Through our amendments, we point out its negative impact on the environment and the internal market, highlight the discrimination created and demand that Romania joins the Schengen area by the end of the year. The costs of the blockage must be compensated. Those responsible must pay, as is the case when Member States violate European legislation”, said Romanian MEP Victor Negrescu, one of the representatives in the European Parliament who supported this resolution and improved it through several amendments.
The MEP mentioned that this was not the first time that Romanians demanded justice and requested the support of the European institutions in tackling this legal conflict.
“This resolution also incorporates the arguments of the 2015 #RomaniaCereSchengen petition, which I initiated and which was then supported by over 50,000 people and the European Parliament. And here we are, today we are once again demanding our right by asking the Commission and the European Parliament to defend the European Union including by challenging Austria’s veto in court. Now or never!”, said MEP Victor Negrescu.
