Victor Negrescu urges the European Commission to implement a long-term programme for Ukrainian refugees, highlighting Romania as an example of good practice

MEP Victor Negrescu has addressed a question to the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, to bring to her attention the need to implement a long-term programme for refugees from Ukraine and to see how regional and civil society expertise can be used in the process of assisting people fleeing war and in the reconstruction of the neighbouring country.

”We have included in the letter a series of recommendations and concrete solutions, drafted together with the Federation of Non-Governmental Organisations for Children, and discussed during a debate on this issue, which we organised together in the European Parliament, hoping that in this way Romanian NGOs, Romanian experts and national authorities will benefit from increased support and adequate funding from the European Union for the activities and services provided”, the MEP detailed.

He stressed that Romania ”has been an example of solidarity since the first day of the war in Ukraine”, so ”it would be normal that these efforts and examples of good practice developed by us are supported at European level”.

”By taking such steps, we show that our country can be a model, but also that we are fighting to promote positive examples so that they can be more visible in the European Union”, said Victor Negrescu.

Last month, the MEP organized in the European Parliament together with the NGOs Federation for Child – FONPC the event entitled ”Solidarity with Ukraine: Providing integrated and long-term services for Ukrainian refugees”.

The objective was to highlight ”the important role played by NGOs in Romania and the need to develop instruments and financial allocations that provide predictability for the sustainability and development of meaningful and quality projects for children”.

It is worth noting that Victor Negrescu was the author of the petition signed by nearly 100 MEPs calling for the immediate implementation of the Civil Protection Mechanism and the Temporary Protection Framework to provide access to education and social services for Ukrainian refugees, especially children;

Victor Negrescu distributed solidarity kits for children coming from Ukraine and obtained additional resources in the Erasmus budget for children, teachers and researchers.

Also, he was the author of the letter to President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, asking for a revision of the regulations regarding European funds in Romania and at EU level, to allow them to be used for refugee programmes.
