MEP Victor Negrescu, Vice-Chair of the Culture and Education Committee of the European Parliament, marked the first edition of the Day of European Authors with young people from Ciugud, Alba county, with whom he discussed their favorite Romanian and European authors.
“The most digitized school in the countryside has many young people who are passionate about reading and I thank them for the enthusiasm with which they and their teachers participated in our initiative to promote this special European day”, said the social democratic MEP.
Drawing together a ”map of the European Union with the favorite authors of other young Europeans”, MEP Victor Negrescu found out from young people what their favorite books are.
”Words have an enormous power, especially on young people and help them to educate themselves, but also to dream how to build a better world”, said MEP Victor Negrescu.
He therefore called for us to ”support together the appetite for reading and, above all, to learn more from each other in the European Union by reading our favorite authors from other Member States”.
This year marked the first edition of the Day of European Authors, an initiative by which the European Commission aims to shed light on everything European literature can offer to a young audience and heighten the youth’s interest in reading in an inclusive way. Further, it aims to reinforce the circulation of literature in Europe and strengthen the competitiveness of the publishing sector.
The Day of European Authors, held for the first time this year, is an initiative of the European Union’s Creative Europe Programme Culture strand, which supports literature and publishing.
