On the eve of the EU-Ukraine Summit in Kiev on 3 February, MEP Victor Negrescu called on European leaders to increase military presence on the Eastern flank, European military production capacity and support for the war-affected country as preconditions for victory against the Russian Federation and peace negotiations. He also pointed to the increased risk of the Russian Federation launching a new bloody offensive in Ukraine after its territorial advance was blocked with the help of Western allies.
“Ukraine is fighting not only for its independence, but also for us. The Russian Federation’s brutal attack on Ukraine was just the beginning of a bloody plan to regain influence in the region. The support of the European Union, the United States and NATO allies has made it possible to block the offensive, but the risk is still very great. The threat of a new Russian offensive still exists. Increased military presence on the Eastern flank as well as in the Black Sea countries, including Romania, military support for Ukraine, financial support for Moldova, maintaining sanctions against Russia are essential for victory and for possible future peace negotiations”, said MEP Victor Negrescu, during the debate in the European Parliament on the preparation of the EU-Ukraine summit.
At the same time, he stressed the need to increase European military production capacity, especially in frontline states. In addition, he insisted that “we must support the population to increase the resilience of European societies, but also rebuild Ukraine on new foundations, fighting corruption and respecting the rights of all minorities”.
“We have the strength to win this war, but European leaders must bear in mind that we can only do so by preserving our democratic values, unity, and the determination we have shown so far”, said MEP Victor Negrescu.
